Overview

The Challenge: To keep an O.R. running smoothly, doctors, nurses, patients, staff and the facility must be in sync. With 50% of the cost of a surgical procedure coming from supplies, it’s understandable that the hundreds of items used for every procedure must be there with a high degree of reliability, economy and accuracy.

Where are the opportunities for improvement in your current supply processes? Can processes be streamlined? As a perioperative professional, how are you addressing these key supply management challenges?

The Medline Approach:
Medline’s exclusive Perioperative Supply Management Solutions will help you simplify your world by linking people, processes and supplies for high-volume clinical procedures. This value-added, four-part program can save you time and money, while improving your overall supply management efficiencies.

How It Works: A Medline team of experienced consultants uses a combination of unique tools to assess, design, present and implement perioperative supply management process improvements. Our first step is to initiate a structured step-by-step process that documents your facility’s day-to-day operations.

Part 1:
The journey to meaningful change starts with a meaningful understanding.
Part 2:
Experienced O.R. clinicians provide you with a fresh, solid perspective.
Part 4:
The complete financial impact of our proposed solution is made clear.
Part 3:
Logistics experts optimize the links between people, processes and supplies.

Our Medline team will examine each step of your perioperative supply process. With direct observation, open-ended questions, and focused listening, we uncover insights from your clinical and operational staff and look for efficiency opportunities in your supply processes.

Following our Lean methodology, we use classic information gathering methods, including stakeholder interviews (listening to your staff) and observational studies (watching your processes).

At the end of the Lean assessment, you'll receive an executive presentation of findings, an assessment report and an opportunity for a roundtable Q&A session.

The analysis has three phases:

1. Review: The data is organized into a procedural matrix based on your surgical data. The matrix helps provide a roadmap for analyzing your procedures and creates an effective tool for preference card updates.

2. Research: Our O.R. clinical staff members visit your facility to interview key staff members, closely observe procedures and processes (e.g., case pick process) and reviews preference cards, case carts and more.

3. Recommendations: With an understanding of how surgical practice and procedures change over time, make recommendations for increasing clinical efficiency to allow for more time for patient care, eliminating waste, streamlining the case pick process and appropriate supply bundling.

This analysis looks at both your supply flow process and storage needs. We introduce the concept of inventory rationalization, not only how many of an item is there, but whether it’s there in just the right amount and how its par levels should be set.

Case cart and supply flow analysis leads to the subsequent report on the interactions between O.R. and case cart setup. We map your perioperative supply areas and develop 3D renderings of your space to help you visualize where improvements could be made. We also look at how we can help you improve staff productivity through space planning and redesign.

This analysis specifically targets opportunities for cost savings and cost avoidance at your facility. It also describes the financial impact and costs associated with a comprehensive supply management program from Medline.

Starting with baseline financials, our team looks for inventory reduction options and rationale, opportunities for reducing waste, and ways to better capture costs. Hard dollar savings opportunities are quantified; those less quantifiable costs are noted for your own financial analysis.
